ISC DHCPd monitoring with Netdata

What is ISC DHCPd?

ISC DHCP is a DHCP server that supports both IPv4 and IPv6, and is suitable for use in high-volume and high-reliability applications.

Monitoring ISC DHCPd with Netdata

The prerequisites for monitoring ISC DHCPd with Netdata are to have ISC DHCPd and Netdata installed on your system.

Netdata auto discovers hundreds of services, and for those it doesn’t turning on manual discovery is a one line configuration. For more information on configuring Netdata for ISC DHCPd monitoring please read the collector documentation.

You should now see the ISC DHCPd section on the Overview tab in Netdata Cloud already populated with charts about all the metrics you care about.

Netdata has a public demo space (no login required) where you can explore different monitoring use-cases and get a feel for Netdata.

What ISC DHCPd metrics are important to monitor - and why?

Active Leases Total

Active Leases Total is a metric that measures the total number of active leases on the DHCP server. This metric is important to monitor as it gives a general overview of the utilization of the server. If the number of active leases is too high, it can indicate potential problems with the server’s performance, such as overloading or misconfigurations.

Pool Active Leases

Pool Active Leases is a metric that measures the total number of active leases on each DHCP pool. This metric is important to monitor in order to ensure that each DHCP pool is being utilized appropriately. If the number of active leases on a pool is too high, it can indicate potential problems with the pool’s performance, such as overloading or misconfigurations.

Pool Utilization

Pool Utilization is a metric that measures the utilization of each DHCP pool, expressed as a percentage. This metric is important to monitor in order to ensure that each DHCP pool is being utilized appropriately. If the utilization of a pool is too high, it can indicate potential problems with the pool’s performance, such as overloading or misconfigurations.
